Sorry this photo isn’t prettier. I forgot to whip out my cell phone until a few bites in. Before it got all mangled, this was country-fried steak with white gravy, greens, and mashed potatoes with brown gravy, alongside Texas toast and cornbread. I came nowhere close to finishing, but it was delish. That red blob was a BBQ sauce that tasted just like McDonald’s BBQ nugget sauce. Kinda weird—must be a Sysco product or something.
As you can see, I’ve been in East Tennessee all weekend enjoying the local delicacies. This is the kind of place where sweet tea is the default beverage, and there’s no such thing as sauce or dressing on the side, unless you ask real nice. Washingtonians would be horrified.
If you’re ever out this way, be sure to check out Clint’s Family Restaurant for the finest in pulled pork sandwiches, chicken fried chicken (yes, that’s its name), and meatloaf. And don’t miss the terrific carrot cake. You might even get welcomed by Clint himself, a beardy guy in a mechanic’s shirt with a wide smile. He’ll explain what hamburger steak is and make sure your sweet tea stays refilled.
Y’all take care now!
