My fiance and I both love to cook and, especially, to grill. We wanted to give personal, handmade favors at our wedding next month and agreed that jars of homemade grilling rub, personalized with cute stickers, would do the trick. We come from families that are passionate about food (imagine that!) and are psyched to give thought gifts they might actually enjoy. Take that, sugared almonds!
Once we settled on the containers (empty spice jars from Bed Bath & Beyond, $.99/ea.), putting them together was a breeze. We made nine times* the following recipe—enough for 17 wedding favors, plus a jar or two for ourselves:
-1/4 c. turbinado sugar (cheap from the Latin market, or save up “Sugar in the Raw” from the coffeeshop)
-2 tablespoons paprika
-1 tablespoon onion powder
-2 tablespoons seasoned salt
-1 Tbsp. black pepper
-1 tsp. kosher salt
-1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
-1/2 tablespoon chili powder (good quality, such as Whole Foods)
-1 tablespoon lemon pepper
-1 tablespoon sage, dried
-1/2 teaspoon basil, dried
-1/2 teaspoon rosemary, dried and crushed
-1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1. Whisk together all the ingredients, breaking apart any lumps.
2. Using a funnel, spoon grilling rub into empty jars. Re-cover with sifting lid and top.
3. Label/decorate jars. We printed our labels using Avery name badge stickers.
The best part? They’re so “us.”
